Apple presented Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) with full 64-bit support and Core Animation. Objective-C 3.0 was introduced with optional garbage collection (GC), properties and fast enumeration.
Apple announced OS X Mavericks (10.9) and iOS 7. iOS 7 introduced a completely redesigned user interface, featuring a flatter design, new icons and animations and a move away from skeuomorphism. Xcode 5 was announced.
Apple announced OS X Yosemite (10.10) and iOS 8. Yosemite features a redesigned interface inspired by the flatter design from iOS 7. With the Continuity and Handoff features, iOS and Mac OS X more closely interact. Swift is introduced as a new programming language from Apple platforms, Swift is described as “Objective-C without the C”.
Apple announced OS X El Capitan (10.11). iOS 9, and watchOS 2. iOS 9 includes support for 3D Touch (peek and pop). Swift 2 was released, and as of version 2.2 made into an open source project.
Apple announced macOS Sierra (10.12), iOS 10, tvOS 10, and watchOS 3. The APFS file system was announced. Swift 3 was introduced with significant syntax changes, focussing on source stability for future versions.
Apple announced macOS Mojave (10.14), iOS 12, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5. Mojave includes a “dark mode”, iOS 12 includes Shortcuts, Swift 4 was introduced.
Apple announced macOS Catalina (10.15), iOS 13, iPadOS 13, tvOS 13, and watchOS 6. Catalina includes support for Catalyst to run UIKit (iOS/iPadOS) apps on macOS. iOS and iPadOS 13 added support for “dark mode”. SwiftUI was introduced.
Apple announced macOS 11 (Big Sur), iOS 14, iPadOS 14, tvOS 14, and watchOS 7. The transition to Apple Silicon (ARM) was announced, a Developer Transition Kit (DTK) was made available to Mac developers. iOS 14 added support for widgets.
Apple announced macOS 14 (Sonoma), iOS 17, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17, and watchOS 10. A preview of Vision Pro and visionOS was shown. SwiftData and mergeable libraries were announced.
